Cycle Recycle to help families in need

October 23, 2020

We are delighted to have teamed up with Derby County Community Trust and The Great British Children’s Challenge to provide bikes to families in need this winter, but, we need YOUR help.

Our MD Chloe Maudsley said: “If you have an old bike that you don’t use any more we’d LOVE it if you could donate it to this really good cause. In the first place, we need you to bring any unwanted bikes to a special Cycle Recycle donation point that will be open at Derby’s Pride Park Stadium on Thursday, October 29, from 5.30pm-8pm."

Adult and children’s bikes of all sizes will be welcomed. Social distancing will be in place at all times when bikes are brought down and donated.

Chloe added: "It doesn't matter if your old bike has been gathering dust and cobwebs in your shed or garage for ages. Volunteers will service the bikes and get them back to a roadworthy condition before they are donated to people who might not be able to buy a new bike."

The refurbished bikes will then be distributed by the Community Trust’s Inclusion team to individuals and families in time for Christmas.

Your donation could mean a Christmas present for a child who might otherwise go without this year, or it might help an adult to commute to work or get valuable exercise to support their physical and mental health.

Simon Carnall, Head of Community at Derby County, said: “This year, more than ever, we are aiming to provide more opportunities and resources for those who may be at a disadvantage as a result of the pandemic.

“Since April, and the launch of the food donation hub at Pride Park Stadium, we have been supporting our communities through the toughest times many of us have ever faced.

“This service will provide a lifeline to many people and allow them to commute, get to school or increase their physical activity.

“Every bike donated will make a real difference to those families we work with.”

The Great British Children’s Challenge will also support a similar scheme being run in Nottingham by Notts County Football in the Community.

Families who receive the bikes will be encouraged to keep active by taking part in The Great British Children’s Challenge’s Tour de France themed activity through their Riding into the Future challenge.
