Olympic year inspires Derbyshire pupils

March 13, 2020

Children in Derbyshire are using Olympic year as a springboard to learn that it’s fun to be active and exciting to work towards a goal.

Our programme, called Inspiring Champions, sees professional coaches and athletes go into schools and run a day of activities. Now, we have teamed up with Progressive Sports Derbyshire & Nottingham to get the message of Inspiring Champions into more local schools.

Progressive Sports already works in partnership with schools and the community to encourage children to be more physically active. Its managing director, Adam Holland (pictured above with our MD Chloe Maudsley), said: "We are delighted to form this partnership with the Derbyshire Institute of Sport to further enhance the quality of PE and sport delivered to children across Derby City and Derbyshire, and give children more opportunity to be physically active."

Lloyd Madsen of DIS, an experienced coach and former Olympian, said: “The next Olympic and Paralympic Games are just weeks away and we’re proud and delighted that athletes we’ve supported in recent years – many of whom went to schools in Derbyshire - will be seen representing Team GB by a global audience.

“Our Inspiring Champions programme is an easy way for schools in the county to get involved with the excitement of the build-up to the games and learn about what it takes to become a champion in any walk of life – not just sport.”

A typical Inspiring Champions day begins with an inspirational assembly, delivered by a DIS coach or athlete, with time for a Q&A session, photos and autographs.

A trained coach then delivers activities throughout the day. Schools can choose from:

Every child who takes part receives a certificate. Schools are given special DIS medals, which they can use to reward pupils who are seen as ‘champions’ in any aspect of schoolwork or life.
